The Forties Experience

Once a month The Forties Experience, a historical experience and museum about World War II located in Bushey in Watford in Hertfordshire, is open for visitors on their Open Day. This gives everyone the chance to explore the many features on the extensive site of what was the operational headquarters of the 8th Fighter Command US air force squadron during World War II. I went to explore it during their most recent Open Day at the end of March.

This attraction includes indoor as well as outdoor things to see and do including some recreated buildings and scenes like a 1940s house, a village school room, an officers club and a 1940s street scene with a general store. There is also an Anderson Shelter (pictured above), military equipment, uniforms, and maps, a collection of wartime games and toys, and loads of informational displays throughout. There was also a live band performing when I was there as well as a "Blitz Experience" but I did not go in there. The volunteers are very enthusiastic and keen that you have a good experience.

The Forties Experience is also open on other days specifically for school and other groups. What a great educational experience! To see when their next Open House will take place, check out their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/1940sexperience/)
